The series of strangers
After the launching of the Square in 2005, this series of work has followed and continued until now. The motivation of this series Strangers was unfolded by an extreme concept of community. Country and city are exposed under serious contrast; Neighbors are familiar with one and another in the rural community whereas the society in the city is comprised by many strangers. The above was more like a radical simile, yet it contoured the modern society on a certain level. Through the concept, I intended to build up a world that was fully involved with “strangers” in this series of work. By targeting some of the corners within the city, especially those public areas where people gathered, hundreds of photos were taken in a few hours. Later, I retouched these photos digitally by deleting and changing the interactions of people would have, such as playing, talking, taking pictures ... etc. Therefore, in such a seemingly noise crowd, people no longer shared physical connections with others but rather seemed like making up by a lot of individual strangers. The image of this crowed but indifferent scene conveys a message that the photography has made the imagination possible.
